This is the fastest position in swimming. The arms are straight, squeezing the head behind the ears, eyes looking down. The hands are flat, “like a pancake”, and straight, “like an arrow”.
It is a critical position in a competitive start and turn to make the most of the thrust from the wall, one hand on top of another.
However, in breaststroke the hands should be side by side, “thumbs kissing”.
