Each week of the school holidays the Shirley Swimming Pool offers a fast track teaching program for all levels and abilities of children. The high standard of tuition is extended to two hour classes every afternoon, an hour’s tuition and an hour’s supervised free play.
Progress in stroke technique is always visible after a week long course because the children retain the skills they have learnt the previous day. One full hour of tuition gives ample time for one to one attention, explanation, demonstration and repetitive practice. The children really enjoy their playtime, always finishing with a real treasure hunt. At least once a week the large play inflatable is included in playtime.
The lesson plan follows the same theme as the regular weekly lessons, but condensed into five days. So, for example, the diving progressions will begin with in pool practices and progress daily through jumps and kneeling, to attempts at full dives.
The skills learnt are testing against the ASA Water Skills (1-6) through the week and on the last days the swimmers are tested over the length to see how far they can swim. As well as the badges that the children earn they are presented with a commemorative certificate at the end of the week.
