A much loved swimming teacher from Shirley has been nominated for the Swim England Swim Teacher of The Year Award.
2018 marks the anniversary of Jane Monger, who has been teaching toddlers to swim at the Shirley Swimming Pool for 30 years.
Jane began her career at Shirley helping out in reception at the busy teaching pool but was fast tracked into teaching when her bubbly, daft approach to children was recognised. Since then, Jane has become an institution in the small teaching pool, particularly with the 3 and 4 year olds.
“A gentle, fun, sometimes firm approach is needed with this age group and we do have lots of fun” said Jane.
Recently appointed to mentor the younger teachers, Jane says she has many years left in her yet, ” I might pass on some of the beginners classes to the younger teachers, but there is so much for them to learn once they have qualified I’m looking forward to helping them. Dealing with difficult children or even parents can be daunting for a young teacher”
Jane uses a huge variety of songs and even languages to entertain and enthrall the toddlers, introduces them to deep water safety at an appropriate time and tests them for distance awards. There are many 4 year olds that have swum a mile before they reach “big school”.
Chairman Dave Perry organised a staff party for Jane to celebrate her 30 years of service and treated her to tickets to see the Rolling Stones in Southampton.
“It is so rare to see a teacher of Janes quality choose to make a career in swimming teaching, it deserves special recognition. We have had newly qualified teachers who don’t like to get wet let alone spend 30 years in a swimming pool!”
Jane has been nominated for this award, not only for her 30 years of teaching but for her ever cheerful and happy personality while she is working.
It is the fourth time that the Shirley Swimming Pool staff and customers have been recognised by Swim England for outstanding services to Aquatics. The pool also plans to nominate Head Coach Chris White for his 20 years of service in building the competitive section of the swimming club.
