Easter Fireworks at Shirley Pool

Storm Katie brings EASTER FIREWORKS at Southampton Pool

After a dramatic Easter weekend at the Shirley Pool, both pools are open again. Workman preparing a trench for the new electricity supply accidentally nicked the main power supply and when Storm Katie arrived on Easter Saturday, the trench filled with water causing a series of explosions that woke the neighbourhood.

Luckily no one was injured and only the trench was damaged.

The flying squad from Scottish & Southern Electricity arrived and duly repaired the supply, in between continuing explosions. Power was eventually restored to the swimming pool and surrounding houses late on Easter Sunday.

“We are really sorry if we disrupted anyone’s Easter Sunday lunch and very grateful to the flying squad from the electric board who responded so quickly to repair the damage. At one point I thought we were in for a lengthy shut down. I can’t blame the guys digging, it’s just one of those things.” Said Shirley Pool MD Dave Perry

The interruption to the power supply meant that staff could not get into the building to continue with repairs to one of the pools where a leak had been detected.

“ We had drained the small hot pool and found a leak behind the handrails. The lads were just about to refill the pool when the power went down. They did get it operational but not until late on Easter Monday. Everyone was very tired but happy to be open again Tuesday morning.”

The new shower system installed at Christmas was lowered, following many complaints about the power; poolside pillars were painted and a deep clean undertaken of changing rooms and lockers.

The next scheduled closures will be May Bank Holidays
