Full time, permanent swimming teachers required in Southampton.

  • 28 Days paid holiday
  • Company pension
  • £23,000 p.a. for 35 hours

The UK’s only purpose-built, two pool teaching centre, privately owned and managed but still open to the public, Shirley Pool is dedicated to learn to swim.

It provides a clear progressive pathway from baby to butterfly and beyond. Using its own teaching plan and awards, the centre has consistently produced swimmers of County, Regional and National standard.

With over 1800 current customers on direct debit, the business is healthy and the demand for tuition is growing.

You should only apply for this position if you are a dedicated, career swimming teacher. You don’t have to be fully qualified but you will need to demonstrate huge enthusiasm for the role, high-quality communication skills at water level and a genuine appetite for the hard work that is involved in teaching children to swim properly.

In a perfect world, you would have a current NPLQ, parent and baby experience as well as STA/ASA level 2 equivalent. But for the right candidate, the company is prepared to invest in professional training.

The pool is situated in its own grounds, in a busy suburb, a mile from the City Centre. Southampton is a vibrant, diverse City with excellent links to London and the South Coast with its beaches and National Parks.

Teachers are hourly paid, starting at £16.05. After training, a full-time teacher will earn in excess of £23,000 p.a. for a 35 hour week. Depending on skill sets, the applicant can expect to teach around 20 hours a week over five and half days, complemented by admin and reception hours.

There is potential to train in all aspects of running a busy leisure centre.

The pool has its own cafe, a converted double-decker bus, staff receive a 30% discount. Cooled water is provided poolside.

The centre closes at Easter, Christmas and on all bank holidays. Staff receive 28 days paid holiday a year and can opt into the company pension scheme.

Reporting directly to the MD you will be responsible for assessing, teaching and progressing your own classes through all the strokes.

Apprenticeships

The pool is looking for two bright and bubbly youngsters who want to train as swimming teachers. Over the minimum two year period, candidates will receive a paid salary and full training as Lifeguards, Level 1 and 2 STA Swimming Teachers. Working 35 hours over 5 days, all aspects of the pool will be covered: water testing and treatment, pizza making and coffee art, reception, back office, cleaning, stock control and customer service.

Being a good swimmer is essential, as is a level of communication skills, oral and digital.

Starting salary for 17-21 year old is £13,650 rising to £23,000 on completion of training.

Suitable applicants may also be given assistance with relocation and accommodation in the staff house.
