Water Polo at Shirley Swimming Pool

Shirley Pool Water polo squad prepare for their first tournament.........

June 2008

The newly formed Water polo squad from Shirley Swimming Pool prepared for their first tournament with a warm up match against Southampton Water Polo Team.

The team put up a stout and spirited performance against an experienced and older squad. It was literally boys (&girls) against men. Georgia Smith was tenacious in the tackle, Joe Fenton a persistance menace to his olders and betters, while the Campbell brother showed their fitness levels right to the end. Andrew Boyes was probably the man of the match for the Dolphins, climbing high time after time to block and intercept. Billy Smith and Luke Fenton had to look up to their opponents, almost straining their necks, when shaking hands at the end. Leon and Ella Walker and Mitchell Ricketts worked tirelessly and made their mark on several opponents. Dolphins conceded more than they scored, but they did score, several times and could of scored many more as their opposition began to feel the pace of the fitter youngsters. There was much to learn and the Dophins team are sure to improve fast.

Southampton's first Junior Water Polo Tournament March 2005

Fifty children descended on the Shirley Pool on Saturday for Southampton's first junior Water Polo Tournament. Eight teams invited form pools across the city did battle in two age groups, under eleven in the shallow ends and the older children in the deep section. Organiser Chris White from the Shirley Pool says, “It is similar to football, netball or basketball, but in the water, so the game appeals to girls and boys of all ages. The game is fast and physically demanding but anyone that has reached a reasonable level of swimming can take part” The winning teams both came from the Kentish Road teaching centre, Shirley Pool. The “Stingrays”, winning team in the under 11 category, were Luke Fenton, Sam Johnstone, Lauren Cotton, Louise Cotton, Jack Perry and Ryan Long. The top junior team were the “Barracudas”: Ben Parsons, Jack Phillips, Andrew Boyes, Joseph Fenton, Daniel Aranda and Martin Campbell. The next Junior Open Water Polo Event will be held in October.
