During the course of a year the sessions will seek to improve the basic strokes and water skills they have learnt and introduce more advanced techniques, with safety and confidence in the water remaining a priority.
In front crawl, for example, the swimmers now learn to roll onto their sides to breathe, rather than turning right over and in backstroke a continuous arm action is introduced.
Full stroke butterfly and breaststroke are practiced in detail.
Diving, from sitting dives advancing to competitive racing dives, are gradually introduced, building on the shallow water preparations they have mastered - handstands and somersaults.
Flippers are available every playtime and five times a year the whole session is dedicated to flippers with the occasional use of snorkels.

All entries receive an award.
The swimmers that show potential as competitive swimmers are invited to attend Southampton Dolphins Swimming Club presentation evening, with a view to joining the Dolphins – the final group in the swimming club - for a trial.

The children are introduced to all aspects of competitive swimming, whilst keeping enjoyment a priority.
Swimmers now participate in Galas and County Championships
The club hosts swimming galas at Shirley Pool against other swimming clubs. These usually take place on a Saturday at 5.00pm - 7.00pm.
