Padstow
to Rock swim August

Saturday
August 28th and a damp start to the day but nothing to damping
the spirits of seven hardy swimmers from Shirley Swimming
Pool masters club. The venue “Padstow”, the Event
“Padstow to Rock charity swim”, a distance of
approximately one mile. At 1.00pm we all checked into the
Padstow Sailing club to enrol for the event each receiving
a number so to assist in finding us should we get lost! This
sponsored swim was part of four events organised this year
by Shirley Swimming Pool and was dubbed the “Fatboyz
Tour 04”

So
onto the start time of 16:50pm and at high tide almost
200 swimmers started the challenge of crossing the estuary
(focusing on a small white tent in the distance) which
was to be the finishing line. The seven swimmers from
Shirley were Dave Perry, Calum Perry, Luke Perry, Kevin
Gallagher, Steven Hansford, Dean Eatwell and Nigel Colmer.
The best time to beat was apparently 15mins, first in
the water for the Fatboyz was Dave Perry who was having
none of it and eager to beat that time. Closely followed
by his two sons, Luke and Calum. |
| The
weather conditions were ideal for the swim even if the
water was mighty cold! The team estimated to all be finished
within half an hour. The plan was for the photographer
to capture pictures before the swim, during and finishing.
However such was the standard of the Fatboyz, by the time
the photographer had ferried over to Rock, the Fatboyz
mission was complete. |

So, first in was Calum with a time of 20minutes, next in was
Luke in 23minutes, closely followed by Steve with a time of
24minutes. Dave arrived in 26minutes, Nigel and Dean completed
the course in 30 and 33minutes respectfully. Kevin was our
only casualty of the cold water but did very well in attempting
and getting as far as he did.
The real reason the Fatboyz did so well was the lure of a
traditional Cornish pasty at the finishing line. On a more
serious note this event has raised in excess of £6000
for The Macmillan Cancer Research Relief.
....So
far the Fatboyz have completed three charity swimming events
these are Bournemouth Pier to Pier July 18th 2004,
Calshot Open water 1st August 2004 and now Padstow to Rock
28th August 2004, the last being La Mata Open in Spain on
the 25th September 2004.
