Shirley Pool Newsletter January 2004

Mind the Pillars!

You will notice that the brick pillars along the poolside have been removed, leaving the steel uprights. The bases are not so obvious and have caused a few cut toes. Please tell the children to mind their step. The extra cubicle planned for the gents will now be installed at Easter.

Club Championship

Saturday February 28th 2004 is the Shirley Swimming Club and Southampton Dolphins Club championships, held at the Quays. All Tadpoles, Turtles and Dolphins are able to enter and should be encouraged to take part. It is a wonderful evening, a great opportunity for the children to take part in a real gala and everyone comes away with an award. The swimmers will be bringing the forms home soon. The gala will be from 6pm to 9.00pm

Adult Nervous Beginner

One in three adults cannot swim, many that can swim still panic when water is on their face or out of their depth. Will you be jumping in the pool with the kids or sizzling in the sun making excuses. If you want to be in the water this summer, start now. Book a free trial lesson in the small pool in the evening when all the kids have gone to bed or a Monday morning at 9.15am. It is warm and shallow and the teachers do understand the panic you feel.

Have you got your swipe card?

Every swimmer at the pool should have a swipe card. If your children have not, please take a few minutes to complete the details at reception. Emergency contact details and medical information are essential. There is no charge for the swipe card.

Direct Debits

This is the first increase in 18 months. Competition from health clubs and the Quays has hit lane & general swimming. Thanks to the ever-popular lesson programme, we are able to keep the pool going. I trust you find the lessons are still providing good value for money.

To help keep administration costs down, we are offering incentives to join the direct debit scheme. Children’s lessons are £25.00 a month which covers one lesson a week and free public swimming.

The major benefit of the direct debit system is that if you have to miss a lesson through holiday or illness, it can be made up at another time where there is space. A double lesson is ideal if there is a similar class at the other end or come on another day. This means children never miss a lesson, accelerating their development.

Please have a look at the direct debit leaflet for all the benefits of the system.

February Half Term

Bookings are now being taken for the next crash course, February 16th – 20th, 2pm – 4pm daily. You may have seen the press report on five year old Francesca Edwards who swam a mile at the end of a crash course. She was exceptional, but ten hours of swimming in a week gives the kids a real boost. The course costs £60.00 for the week payable on booking.

West End Swim School

Beechwood School and St Monica’s School are used for swimming lessons run by Shirley Pool. Ruth and Chris are the teachers on a Monday and Wednesday respectively. If you have any friends on that side of the water with children needing swimming lessons, please let them know.
