The Dolphins Swimming Club

Talented children are selected as early as 7 years old and invited to the Dolphins Swimming Team. Not all go on to competition swimming. Those that enjoy racing will gradually gain a level of fitness and technique that will last a lifetime and strengthen all their other sports. Since its inception the Dolphins have nurtured county and national level swimmers.

Frank and Val Perry founded West End Swim School in a garage pool in 1969. Both were from swimming families. They built the Shirley pool in 1974 and Shirley Swimming Club was formed. A competitive club, "West End", took the best children and was successfully producing County champions and National standard swimmers.

Dolphins was started in the spring of 1993, again inviting the best swimmers from Shirley Swimming Club to take part in local competitions. The Shirley Club has become the largest swimming club of its kind in Southampton and the Dolphins are the only Development Club in the area.

The aim is to provide a safe, friendly environment where children can develop their water skills to their full potential. This means that we will try to select promising swimmers, gently introduce them to competitive swimming and provide an introduction to a local dedicated competition club at the age of 15 to 16.

Dolphins

Competitive swimming is a sport that requires a high level of dedication and racing does not suit all children. During the trial period, children are allowed to combine their usual club session with one Dolphins session. This way, at the end of the trial, if the swimmer decides not to take up the place they can easily return to their normal swimming routine.

The children are introduced to all aspects of competitive swimming, whilst keeping enjoyment a priority.
Swimmers now participate in Galas and County Championships
The club hosts swimming galas at Shirley Pool against other swimming clubs. These usually take place on a Saturday at 5.00pm - 7.00pm.
The club also travels to other local clubs for competitions.
